The session will be introduced by Will Aplin, ANZSLA Director. Jon and Peter will discuss media rights issues including the live-streaming of sport and illegal live-streaming and how jurisdictions are combatting it.

| Jon Marquard, Principal and Founder, Janez Media
Jon runs Janez Media, a media and digital advisory practice which has been operating in Australia and internationally for 11 years. Janez Media provides a range of specialist services across the digital and audio-visual media sectors, and works with OTT platforms, international and domestic sporting bodies, start-ups and telecommunications companies. Janez Media has been at the forefront of some of the biggest shifts and changes that have occurred in the media and sports sectors in the past few years.
Jon has been directly involved in numerous sporting events where piracy and protection of media rights have been front-of-mind. These include:

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. Janez Media acted for Optus in initially acquiring the rights for them, and managed its commercial relationships with FIFA. Janez was also engaged in an ongoing capacity throughout the lead-up to and beyond the tournament in a variety of operational and advisory roles.

Prior to establishing Janez Media, Jon was the Chief Operating Officer of the Ten Network where he oversaw numerous business units and divisions across the company, including all sport. At Ten he ran the strategy and negotiations to acquire the Big Bash league rights, which was transformative for both Ten and Cricket Australia at the time. Jon has also held the position of COO at Fox Sports and prior to that was a corporate lawyer.

Peter Carstairs, Senior Lawyer, Intellectual Property, Gilbert + Tobin
Peter is a senior IP lawyer in Gilbert + Tobin’s Band 1 Intellectual Property group. He specialises in copyright, trade mark and other complex IP litigation with a focus on the media, entertainment, and technology industries. Peter has experience in relation to the protection of clients’ IP including through enforcement and anti-piracy actions. He also has extensive experience in the film, television and advertising industries and has worked as a filmmaker in Australia, London and Los Angeles, including directing a Super Bowl commercial in 2016. In addition to his day-to-day practice, Peter sits on the Board of the Copyright Society of Australia
and the Editorial Committee of the Australian IP Law Bulletin. Recent thought-leadership publications include: -
