The Commentator: Volume 84 –29 January 2012

Welcome to Volume 84 of The Commentator. In his President’s column, Ian Hunt reviews the last year for ANZSLA and looks forward to events such as the London Olympics and the Perth Conference.  Ian also comments on the renewed ties between ANZSLA and SPARC and looks forward to closer ties with other agencies and the NSOs. In the first article for this edition, Garth Towan, a lawyer at Coulter Roache in Geelong studies the desirability of and challenges involved in the possibility of uniform international criminal legislation of doping offences. In the second article, Allan Walsh, a Senior Associate with Zeeman + Zeeman a Tasmanian firm tackles the issue of ambush marketing from a different perspective from previous articles published in the Commentator. In the final article, Cameron Mills, a final year student at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.  looks at issues surrounding the NBA’s rule which prohibits entry into its draft unless the athlete has turned 19 years of age. He looks at anti-trust legislation and the conflicting decisions from the US Courts on the issue, as well as the lack of litigation over it. In my editorial I discuss the current review of the Australian laws on the definition of charities with the possibility of including sports in the definition of charities for tax deductibility
