TWO YEAR FIXED TERM APPOINTMENT
The National Sports Tribunal is a new dispute resolution mechanism established by the Australian Government to provide the sports sector with timely, transparent, cost-effective and consistent resolution of sport-related disputes – including anti-doping disputes – through private arbitration, mediation, conciliation or case appraisal.
The National Sports Tribunal will initially be established as a two year pilot, commencing in early 2020, with ongoing arrangements subject to further decision as informed by the success of the pilot phase.
The Government is seeking an outstanding, inspirational leader and experienced legal professional to guide the establishment activities of the National Sports Tribunal, the successful execution of its operations once established, and the delivery of reliable, high-quality arbitral decisions and other dispute resolution services – often in circumstances of significant public and media scrutiny.
As CEO, you will make a significant contribution to shaping the National Sports Tribunal, ensuring operational excellence and successfully positioning it to be the forum of choice for resolution of sport-related disputes in Australia. You will be responsible to government and to the Minister for Youth and Sport for providing expert advice on the operation of the National Sports Tribunal and will work closely with the Department of Health to ensure the National Sports Tribunal’s strategic planning, operating and service models, office infrastructure, staffing, and business and support systems are in place to commence operations within the required timeframes. A key component of the role will be applying extensive experience in litigation and dispute resolution to finalise the procedural and administrative arrangements prior to the expected launch in 2020. The CEO will also need to engage with a broad range of national and international stakeholders to provide education and enhance awareness of the operations of the National Sports Tribunal to secure its place in the Australian sporting landscape.
Transitional arrangements
The successful applicant will initially be offered a contract for up to three months with the Department of Health, prior to the commencement of the National Sports Tribunal (and accordingly, the office of the CEO). The applicant will occupy the statutory office of the CEO on establishment in early 2020. This will be a fixed term appointment of two years, with the possibility of an extension.
To be a strong contender for this nationally important and challenging role, you will need to demonstrate exceptional leadership and vision with deep knowledge and skills acquired in the area of dispute resolution practices and procedures, including conciliation, mediation and arbitration. You will have proven experience in managing large and/or complex operations, high-level people management, and stakeholder engagement, together with strong communication, representational and negotiation skills. You will also be forward thinking, self-motivated and engender a high standard of professional and personal integrity. As CEO, you must also develop and maintain a broad understanding of contemporary and emerging domestic and international issues of relevance to integrity and conduct in the sports sector. A strong understanding of the operations and responsibilities of a public sector tribunal is desirable, as are appropriate legal qualifications.
