James Johnson is a highly respected leader in world football. Appointed Chief Executive Officer of Football Australia in January 2020, previously he held senior positions at FIFA, City Football Group and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). A former professional footballer and qualified lawyer, under James’s leadership Football Australia co-hosted the most successful FIFA Women’s World Cup ever in 2023, which delivered significant legacy impacts; won the right to host the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and transformed the governance of Australian football; all while developing the domestic and global profile of the CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos brands, and unlocking increased investment to support all levels of the game and its communities. James is also a non-executive advisory board member of the Association Football Development Program Global, a featured speaker at sports conferences around the world and has been recognised personally at the Leaders Sports Awards.
