Ethics of decision making in team environments

In any high pressure environment, individuals can be faced with the task of making decisions in the heat of the moment. In team environments, whether in team sports or at a board or committee level, those decisions may not be entirely up to the individual.

Facilitated by Associate Professor Dr Sandy Gordon, our panel of current and former elite athletes will provide an insight into the complexities of ethics in team environments, share their personal experiences and discuss the difficulties in decision making that can arise in the context of a group.  Panellists include Carys Hawkins (Perth Glory player and lawyer at Sparke Helmore), Damian Martin (Perth Wildcats captain and Australian Boomers), Drew Petrie (former player for North Melbourne and Head Coach - Game Development at the West Coast Eagles) and Tal Karp (Director of Sixfold Consulting Group and former Matilda).

Media Laws and Sports Integrity

Hear from one of Australia’s most experienced and well recognised media law practitioners on the interaction between media laws and preservation of integrity in sport. Justin Quill (Partner, Macpherson Kelley) has provided advice to several Australian news agencies as well as AFL media and has published articles on various issues relating to sports integrity in the Herald Sun and the West Australian.

Athlete wellbeing: duty of care and mental health

It may be considered a dream job, but the life of an elite athlete can present many challenges that affect an athlete's mental health and wellbeing. Ensuring the wellbeing of athletes in Australia and New Zealand is a current focus in the sports industry, with a multitude of legal, commercial and social issues  An exceptional panel will discuss the legal issues that arise in ensuring athlete wellbeing, including the duty of care a sporting organisation has to its athletes, ensuring high performance, and what is being done and what can be improved to support our athletes through these challenges.  Panellists include Courtney Bruce (player for the Australian Diamonds and West Coast Fever), Matti Clements (psychologist and Deputy Director for Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement at the AIS) and Stephen Cottrell (Principal of Cottsport, and author of a 2018 report into athletes' rights and welfare for Sport NZ).

The panel discussion will be facilitated by Will Robinson, Partner at Wotton + Kearney.  Wotton + Kearney have generously sponsored this session on the conference programme.
