Concussion in Sport: Legal and Academic Perspectives

ANZSLA invites you to attend a webinar with expert guest speakers David Thorpe (School of Law, University of Sydney) and Leon Harris (School of Law and Society, University of the Sunshine Coast). Leon will give an overview of his PhD research into sport-related concussion and how this translates into practice, and David will then discuss the legal issues and legal challenges.

 

This session will be facilitated by Dr Annette Greenhow (ANZSLA Director; Legal Academic, Faculty of Law, Bond University).

David Thorpe, School of Law, University of Sydney

 

David Thorpe teaches Sports Law at the University of Sydney School of Law and is an author of Sports Law (OUP 4th ed.) and several law journal articles concerned with sports law.

 

Leon Harris, School of Law and Society, University of the Sunshine Coast

 

Leon Harris is currently a PhD candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) in the area of contact sports and concussion with a focus on potential liability of governing bodies particularly with reference to women and children. He is also lecturer in charge of courses in Civil Procedure and Contract Law B at UniSC where he works as a Clinical Legal Educator.

He was admitted to practice as a legal practitioner in the Supreme Courts of Queensland and New South Wales and practiced law in Queensland. Leon has also taught extensively in secondary education and administration both in Australia and the United States and is one of the lead authors of the University of Cambridge Legal studies text for Queensland.

Dr Annette Greenhow, ANZSLA Director; Legal Academic, Faculty of Law, Bond University

 

Annette is admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at Bond University. Annette teaches and researches in the areas of global sports law and governance, Australian sports law, corporate law, tort law and regulation and governance.  Annette’s PhD examined the regulation of sport-related concussion as a public health concern in Australia, identifying the actors, relationships and resources within this regulatory space.

 

Annette is a Board member of ANZSLA, General Editor of the Sports Law and Governance Journal and Director of the Centre for Commercial Law at Bond University. Annette regularly presents and publishes on topics related to her areas of expertise.
