ANZSLA and the Japan Sports Law Association (JSLA) invite you to attend a webinar discussing sports dispute resolution in Australia and Japan, with distinguished guest speakers: John Boultbee (CEO, National Sports Tribunal) and Venetia Bennett (Barrister & National Sports Tribunal member) who will discuss the National Sports Tribunal (NST); and Shoichi Sugiyama (Partner, Field-R Law Offices and Japan Sports Arbitration Agency member); and Masayuki Tamaruya (Professor, Tokyo University and Arbitrator, Japan Sports Arbitration Agency), who will talk about the Japan Sports Arbitration Agency (JSAA). 

 

This session will be facilitated by Dr Annette Greenhow (ANZSLA Director and Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Bond University).

John Boultbee AM, CEO, National Sports Tribunal 

 

Sport administrator and lawyer John Boultbee AM is the NST's inaugural CEO. John is very experienced in the Australian and international sporting community. He has been particularly involved in rowing, football and volleyball. He was involved in Australia’s most successful Olympics – Sydney 2000 – as the then-director of the Australian Institute of Sport.

 

The CEO actively manages NST administration and staff to provide resolution services. The CEO has a range of powers as outlined in the establishing legislation, including:

allocating Members to hear a matter; arrangements for determining and sharing the NST's costs related to the matter.

Shoichi Sugiyama, Partner, Field-R Law Offices, Japan & Japan Sports Arbitration Agency

 

Shoichi Sugiyama is a Tokyo-based lawyer and Partner at Field-R Law Offices. He is a member of the Japan Sports Law Association.  Shoichi is also a Case Manager to Japan Sports Arbitration Agency, the independent dispute resolution center for sport-related disputes in Japan.

 

Venetia Bennett, Barrister & National Sports Tribunal member

 

Venetia Bennett is a commercial barrister who provides strategic legal advice to Australian and international organisations in disputes, predominantly in the construction, resources and sports industries. Venetia has chaired numerous disciplinary, grievance and appeals tribunals for international, national and state sports associations, and she is a member of the expert mediation panel for Immediation. In March 2020, Venetia was appointed an inaugural member of the National Sports Tribunal.

 

Venetia is a Life Member and immediate past President of ANZSLA.

 

Masayuki Tamaruya, Professor, Tokyo University & Arbitrator, Japan Sports Arbitration Agency

 

Masayuki Tamaruya is the Professor of Law at the University of Tokyo, where he specializes in comparative law, dispute resolution, and the law of trusts and nonprofits. He has acted as an arbitrator for anti-doping and sports-related cases at Japan Sports Arbitration Agency. His publications include a co-authored guidebook on anti-doping proceedings and a number of research reports on sports dispute resolution, as well as books and articles on civil procedure, dispute resolutions, and comparative law.

 

Dr Annette Greenhow, ANZSLA Board & Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Bond University

 

Annette is admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at Bond University. Annette teaches and researches in the areas of sports law, corporate law, regulation and governance.  Annette’s PhD examined the regulation of sport-related concussion as a public health concern in Australia, identifying the role of state and non-state actors in regulating this space.

 

Annette is General Editor of the Sports Law and Governance Journal and Director of the Centre for Commercial Law.  Annette currently provides legal consultancy services to several industry groups and regularly presents and publishes on topics related to her areas of expertise.
