The Australian Olympic Committee are delighted to open an expression of interest for Australian qualified lawyers to provide pro bono advice on nomination and selection appeals to athletes and National Federations.

 

How will it work

 

The AOC will hold a list of Australian qualified lawyers who are interested in providing pro bono advice to athletes and National Federations. This list will be made available from 27 January 2020 to 11 August 2020.

 

The list will be made available to athletes and National Federations (via the AOC’s Athlete Portal and Games Hub extranets) seeking support through appeals processes when they arise.

 

The athlete or National Federation will contact the lawyer directly to engage them to provide advice on a pro bono basis.

 

The AOC does not take any responsibility for the advice you are providing nor will the services or advice you provide be covered by AOC insurance.

 

Type of Advice

 

It is expected that the type of advice that will be required from an athlete or National Federation will relate to nominations and/or selections for the 2020 Australian Olympic Team.

 

Eligibility

 

To be included on the pro bono list you will need to meet the following criteria:

 

• Hold a Bachelor of Laws or equivalent and a current Australian practising certificate;
• Be covered by appropriate professional indemnity insurance; and 
• Be available to provide advice and/or appear at tribunals (which may be on short notice) between 27 January 2020 and 11 August 2020.

 

It is preferable that you have experience in:

 

• sports law (e.g. athlete eligibility, athlete selection, sports disciplinary proceedings);
• arbitration or dispute resolution; and 
• appearing at sports tribunals/appeals tribunals
