Insurance Manager & Legal Counsel - AFL

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to Head of Legal and Regulatory, you will be responsible for three main tasks.

 

First, the management of the AFL’s Collective Insurance Program, working with the AFL’s appointed broker for all AFL industry participants including AFL House (including all AFL activities, events and programs), AFL State Entities, SANFL and WAFL, AFL Clubs, AFL and AFLW players and approximately 2,500 community football clubs in Australia (Insureds). 

 

Secondly, oversight of the related AFL Club Compliance Program which promotes best practice behaviours by AFL Clubs on a range of indicia with the dual benefit of maintaining insurance premium stability and determining AFL Club eligibility for payment of incentives.

 

Thirdly, providing legal advice as part of the AFL Legal team, particularly with respect to litigious matters, being insured and uninsured claims.

Please note, employment in this position may be subject to a satisfactory criminal history record check and possessing a valid ‘working with children’ check. The AFL has extensive procedures and checks in place to protect children and young people in our organisation.

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

 

Insurance

 

Liaise with the AFL’s appointed broker in relation to:

 

  • the Collective Insurance Program generally including policy renewals, premium allocations to the Insureds and public liability claims
  • the lodgement and management of claims on behalf of the Insureds
  • annual joint presentations to AFL Clubs and ad hoc presentations on request to AFL State Entities and community football leagues
  • the provision of information on all policies for reporting to the relevant underwriter
  • numerous general enquiries, including as to the applicability of the Collective Insurance Program for particular events and (where not applicable) arranging bespoke insurance coverage for such events
  • liaise with the Insureds in relation to all aspects of the conduct of the Collective Insurance Program generally
  • manage (including settlement) of claims within the applicable deductible (in particular small claims for minor injuries or damage to property)
  • liaise with AFL Legal in relation the management of claims for which there is no relevant cover or insured claims which have the risk of substantial liability and/or adverse media attention
  • review claims under the motor vehicle insurance programs and provide driver training where appropriate

 

Legal

 

  • Manage claims (both insured and uninsured) threatened and made against the AFL and related subsidiaries, including investigating relevant matters and providing instructions to insurers and external solicitors (where appropriate)
  • Provision of legal advice towards commercial decision making and ensuring all operations of thee AFL are conducted within acceptable parameters, highlighting business risks and ensuring compliance with the law

 

OUR IDEAL TEAM MEMBER

 

Mandatory

·        Insurance related qualification from ANZIF

·        Law degree

·        2+ years’ experience working with a corporate insurance broker or in-house insurance role working in general insurance

·        2+ years’ post admission experience in a large/medium law firm or in-house counsel role

·        Proactive influence who can engage with a range of stakeholders

·        Adaptable and flexible working style

 

Desirable
·        Experience in an insurance role with exposure to sporting organisations and relevant insurance products

·        Public liability claims experience

·        Experience in a litigation role either in a law firm or in-house role

·        Current practising certificate

·        Good understanding of the AFL industry
