Basketball Australia (BA) is the national governing body for one of the country’s fastest-growing and most-loved sports. In partnership with our State and Territory member associations, we lead, develop and promote the game from grassroots participation through to our world-class national teams - the Boomers, Opals, Rollers, Gliders and 3x3 programs.

 

With the launch of our new 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, our ambitious Basketball 2040 Vision, refreshed BA Values, Innovate RAP (2024–2026), and Women & Girls Strategy, BA is entering a period of significant growth and momentum. The Opportunity

We are seeking an accomplished General Manager, Legal & Governance to provide leadership and expert oversight of the organisation’s legal, governance, and business compliance functions. This role ensures that the organisation operates within a robust legal and ethical framework, supports sound decision-making, and promotes transparency, integrity, and accountability across all areas of operation. This is a rare opportunity to influence in a purpose-led organisation at a national level.

 

  • Reporting to the COO the position has the following overarching responsibilities (see PD for full range):
  • Provide authoritative legal and governance advice to the Board, CEO and Executive team.
  • Drive the development and implementation of the organisation’s legal, risk, and business governance frameworks aligned with strategic and operational priorities.
  • Contribute to whole of business planning and project management.
  • Build capability across the organisation through legal and governance education, training, and advice.
  • Oversee and manage all legal matters for the business.
  • Act as in-house counsel to provide, or coordinate through external counsel, high-quality, timely legal advice on all matters relevant to the business, including corporate, commercial, employment, integrity and regulatory matters.
  • Review and support the negotiation of all business contracts, including commercial partnerships.
  • Manage relationships with external legal providers, ensuring high-quality, cost-effective engagement.
  • Support the Company Secretary functions including Board and Committee support, corporate policy development, services procurement, delegations, and statutory compliance.
  • Ensure effective corporate governance practices that support values-based conduct and informed decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain systems that comply with best practice governance standards to promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement in governance and business practices.
  • Provide oversight of the organisation’s enterprise risk management framework.
  • Oversee compliance frameworks, internal controls, and assurance processes to identify and mitigate organisational risks.
  • Lead initiatives that strengthen risk awareness and resilience across the organisation.

 

About You

You are an experienced governance leader with the confidence and credibility to operate at Board and executive level. You bring sound judgement, exceptional stakeholder skills and a passion for purpose-driven organisations.

 

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Current Practicing Certificate
  • Minimum 5 years PQE, preferably with experience working in a sporting organisation.
