ANZSLA invites you to attend a sports law webinar with Dr David Hughes (Chief Medial Officer, Australian Institute of Sport) and Juanita Maiden (Senior Associate, Murdoch Lawyers), and moderated by Dr Annette Greenhow (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Bond University). 

 

This webinar examines the challenges for sport in navigating public health, legal and governance considerations associated with COVID-19. Drawing from the extensive range of experiences in the field, panelists will present on the following:

 

  • A brief overview of COVID-19 and its impact on sporting activities
  • The inherent challenges of conducting sport in a COVID-19 environment
  • The process of developing guidelines for a safe resumption of sport
  • The practical legal and governance considerations in managing risks associated with COVID-19

Dr David Hughes, Chief Medical Officer, Australian Institute of Sport  

 

Dr David Hughes is a Sport & Exercise Medicine Physician with over 25 years' experience working in high performance sport. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of the AIS and Medical Director for the Australian Olympic Team for Tokyo 2020/2021. Experience includes Super Rugby, the NRL and English Premier League football. He attended London 2012 as Team Physician for the Opals and Rio 2016 as Olympic Team Medical Director. He is a former President of the Australasian College of Sport & Exercise Physicians (ACSEP). Dr Hughes’ current work focus is on system-wide protocols to optimise athlete health & safety and ethical/integrity challenges in high performance sport. He was the primary author of the 'AIS Framework for rebooting sport in a COVID-19 environment'.

Juanita Maiden, Senior Associate, Murdoch Lawyers 

 

Juanita is a Senior Associate at Murdoch Lawyers in Brisbane and an ANZSLA member. She is currently an independent Director on the Boards of both Queensland Cricket and South East Queensland Rugby League. Juanita has been Chairperson of the AFL Queensland Tribunal since 2017 and has spoken as a guest lecturer for the undergraduate sports law subject at the University of Queensland on the topic of Sporting Disciplinary Tribunals and Arbitration. She is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course and a previous CEO of the Cairns Taipans National Basketball League Club. At a grassroots level she is a volunteer at her son’s local rugby league club and is an NRL accredited junior rugby league coach (admitting her biggest sporting challenge to date has been coaching the Wests Panthers u6’s).

Annette is admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at Bond University. Annette teaches and researches in the areas of sports law, corporate law, regulation and governance.  Annette’s PhD examined the regulation of sport-related concussion as a public health concern in Australia, identifying the duty of care of state and non-state actors.

 

Annette is General Editor of the Sports Law eJournal and Director of the Centre for Commercial Law.  Annette currently provides legal consultancy services to several industry groups and regularly presents and publishes on topics related to her areas of expertise.
