ANZSLA invites you to attend a regional sports law seminar on Friday 29 November 2019 from 3.45pm (4.00pm start) to 7.00pm in the Television Broadcasting Room @ the Hagley Oval, 63 Riccarton Ave, Central Christchurch.

Sports law is a rapidly developing area of the law which produces challenging legal and commercial issues. This seminar will provide you with a review of recent sports law developments in New Zealand and internationally for 2018/ 2019, insights into the high profile culture and leadership dramas in NZ sport and the emergence of Hagley Oval into a world class cricket venue.

Paul David QC will bring you right up to date with sports law developments in New Zealand and around the world and discuss some areas to watch in 2020.

Professor Elizabeth Toomey will outline her ongoing research that addresses current issues relating to the welfare of high-performance athletes, coaches and staff. The failure of cultural and leadership issues across a range of high profile sports has attracted significant media attention in the last few years and has resulted in a number of independent reviews of various sporting codes. The reviews make sobering reading and the resulting recommendations highlight the need for a better balance between winning on the world stage and the welfare of athletes, coaches and others working within high performance sport.

In the final presentation, Lee Robinson will speak about the 22-year journey that has seen Hagley Oval develop into an international cricket ground. Hagley Oval was established as a cricket ground at Hagley Park in 1860 with the first international cricket match being played in 1864.  International and representative cricket moved to Lancaster Park in 1930 but that window for cricket closed with the emergence of Super Rugby, hence the need to transform Hagley Oval.

Please feel free to join members and guests for networking and refreshments after the discussion.

There is no cost to attend this seminar but registration is essential.
