After a brief hiatus, anti-doping returns to the ANZSLA conference programme this year with Regina Weiss (Barrister, Svenson Barristers) moderating Thursday's panel session: Is the Current Anti-Doping System Fit for Purpose?  Prior to her call to the Bar, Regina led the legal teams of SIA and ASADA. She will be joined by an exceptional panel of anti-doping arbitrators and advocates: The Hon Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC; Paul Greene, Partner, Global Sports Advocates; and Alexis Schoeb, Partner, Peter & Kim.

CONFERENCE SESSION: IS THE CURRENT ANTI-DOPING SYSTEM FIT FOR PURPOSE?

Moderator: Regina Weiss, Barrister, Svenson Barristers

 

Regina is an Australian human rights barrister who specialises, amongst other things, in institutional abuse matters and Reviews into sexual and other abuse in sport. She recently completed a Review into a former police officer who suicided when an investigation was launched into allegations of his grooming and sexually abusing teenage boys through sport. The Weiss Review found that he had groomed and abused over 50 teenage boys over a 30 year period and made various recommendations including restorative justice and redress for victims, and the strengthening of ties between sport and police. All recommendations have been accepted by the Tasmanian government. 

 

Previously, Regina led the Victorian Racing Integrity Commissioner's Review into historical sexual abuse (2023) and was briefed as independent counsel to lead the Sport Integrity Australia Independent Review into the Western Australian Institute of Sport Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Program (2022).

 

Prior to her call to the Bar, Regina led the legal teams of Sport Integrity Australia and ASADA and was a prosecution trial lawyer at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for close to a decade, where she prosecuted war crimes and crimes against humanity in cases emanating predominantly from east Africa.

Regina remains of the List of Counsel for victims and defence at the ICC, is the ICC Bar Association (ICCBA) focal point on sexual and gender-based violence and chairs the ICCBA Ecocide Working Group. Locally, Regina is Chair of  the Australian Red Cross Internation Humanitarian Law Committee (Tas).

 

The Hon Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC

 

The Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC retired as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia in March 2016.

Dr Bennett initially graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science Degree and subsequently completed a PhD in Cell Biology. Later, she studied Law and practised as a Barrister, specialising in Intellectual Property. She became a Senior Counsel in New South Wales in 1994.  She has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by ANU, UNSW, Sydney University and Bond University.

 

She currently acts as a Consultant Barrister (Senior Counsel) and Mediator/Arbitrator.  Her present positions include Chancellor, Bond University (until May 2024); Board member of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and Chair of Gardior Pty Ltd (trustee of The Infrastructure Fund). 

 

Dr Bennett was appointed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.  She has been a member of a Panel and Sole Arbitrator in a number of cases in the CAS.  She has been a member of the CAS ad hoc Divisions at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi (2014) and Beijing (2022) and Summer Olympic Games in Rio (2016) and Tokyo (2020) and the Commonwealth Games (2022).  She has been named as a member of the ad hoc Division for the Summer Olympic Games 2024 (Paris).  She has presided over the majority of the Panels on which she served and has also sat as a Sole Arbitrator, including in doping and selection disputes.  She is a member of the International Cricket Council Dispute Resolution Committee.

 

Paul Greene, Partner, Global Sports Advocates

 

Paul J. Greene, the founder of Global Sports Advocates, has been recognized by Chambers and Partners as one of the world’s leading sports lawyers for more than a decade.  Paul has handled sports law matters around the world, including numerous cases before the Court of Arbitration for Sport based in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has represented athletes from more than 60 countries and more than 60 sports, and has even represented an Olympic gold medal winning horse. 

 

Paul is best known for his successful advocacy on behalf of athletes in anti-doping and eligibility matters, including his advocacy on behalf of Australia’s Peter Bol. Paul represented Mr. Bol in his high-profile 2023 case where an initial charge of an anti-doping rule violation was made and then later dropped.

 

Paul is coming to Australia for the first-time and honored to be a speaker at the 2024 ANZSLA Conference

 

Alexis Schoeb, Partner, Peter & Kim

 

Alexis Schoeb is a partner of specialist international arbitration firm Peter & Kim. A Swiss-qualified lawyer based in Sydney, Alexis has extensive experience both as an arbitrator and as counsel in complex commercial and sports arbitration proceedings. 

 

With over 20 years of expertise, he has advised and represented individuals, companies, and international sports organizations in high-stakes international commercial and sports disputes. His clientele includes high-profile athletes, agents, and some of Europe’s most prominent football clubs such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Panathinaikos. 

 

Alexis has served as counsel in over 80 cases before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), FIFA and UEFA tribunals and other international sporting tribunals. His experience includes contractual disputes, transfer, match-fixing, antidoping, disciplinary and Olympic games selection disputes. 

 

From 2018 to 2024, Alexis was a member of the CAS list of arbitrators, during which time he was appointed in nearly 100 CAS proceedings. Additionally, he has acted as an arbitrator in over 20 cases before arbitral tribunals constituted under the auspices of various international sports federations, including UK Sport Resolution, UCI, AIBA, and FIVB.

The team at Sydney Harbour Kayaks will guide you out on to this 'working' harbour to experience Sydney from a completely new perspective. This 2-hour excursion is conducted in stable double sea kayaks, guided by experienced guides. The Main Harbour can become rough with lots of ferry wash/wake. Splashing is likely to occur, so please dress for the conditions. This is a private tour and therefore subject to availability (first-in first-served basis). 

Sydney Harbour & Rocks Walking Tour

Explore the historic district of Sydney and Sydney Harbour. From the laneways of the Rocks to the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Customs House. Your guide will explain the stories behind the famous landmarks as well as Sydney convict beginnings and first contact with our Indigenous people. Tour includes: Lower and upper Rocks, Sydney Harbour (Opera House and Harbour Bridge). Tour finishes on Dawes Point.
