Netball Australia - Legal Counsel
Netball Australia are excited to start the search for our next team member to undertake the position of Legal Counsel. As Legal Counsel, this position acts as the in-house legal contact & supports the business with a focus on risk management, compliance/regulation, procurement, and commercial matters. This role also provides legal advice and implements activity to support compliance with relevant legal, statutory and regulatory requirements.
This position is an ongoing role. This position will be based at our head office at Netball Australia in vibrant Fitzroy, Victoria.

Who are we looking for?
You are a dedicated professional who isn’t afraid to challenge with respect, bright and approachable persona and ideally have a solid understanding of a federated National Professional Sports model.
Some of your main duties and responsibilities will include:
- Advising on a range of legal matters and support to all stakeholders, including those relating to sponsorship and media rights, Suncorp Super Netball, venues, marketing strategies, legislative obligations, compliance and risk management, employment law, ad hoc legal matters, litigation and integrity issues;
- Drafting, reviewing and advising on commercial agreements (including with government funding bodies, service providers, member organisations, international netball bodies, partners and sponsors);
- Drafting, reviewing, and updating policies and procedures to mitigate legal and business risks and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements (including sport integrity, child safety, national redress scheme, work health and safety, procurement, employment, privacy, and consumer law requirements);
- Contributing to and delivering legal education and induction initiatives;
- Overseeing Netball Australia’s trademarks portfolio;
- Managing and develop Netball Australia’s transition to digital legal portal (including developing and adapting legal precedents and templates, adapting procurement and contract processes to meet business needs, providing training to business users, and empowering them to self-serve where appropriate).
Position requirements:
- General commercial lawyer with 5+ years post admission experience gained in either an in-house or private practice environment
- Experience in sport and/or entertainment preferred (but not essential), or commercial/contract law. Experience in media rights law, IT/Digital projects and competition law would be considered favourably.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in law and current practising certificate in Victoria or eligibility and willingness to obtain this practicing certificate
- Flexible and approachable manner, being the first point of contact for the business on all legal matters
- High degree of autonomy with the ability to take initiative and seek assistance from legal consultants or external legal counsel as appropriate
- High level of information and technology literacy and a strong interest in legal tech and automation
- Strong drafting skills, ability to work autonomously and within a collaborative team environment
- Excellent communication and analytical skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to apply a commercial lens to their advice and ability to negotiate effectively.
